Halpern's mother killed
The mother of former men's hockey star Jeff Halpern '99 died in a car accident in Davie, Fla., last Friday night. Gloria Halpern was traveling in a car with three other people when it was hit by an out-of-control fuel tanker.
All four passengers were killed. The three other victims remain unidentified, but two are thought to be Halpern's relatives.
Gloria Halpern championed the cause of youth hockey in the Washington area. Always supportive of her son's pursuits, she sent Jeff to a New Hampshire boarding school to play hockey. Washington area families looking to produce top hockey players knew to seek advice from her and her husband, Mel.
Jeff Halpern returned from Switzerland for the funeral. A member of the Washington Captiols, he has been playing for the Swiss Elite League's Kloten as the NHL lockout drags on.

Women's hockey player Sarah Butsch has been named Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League player of the week.

Of Butsch's 20 career goals, nine have either won or tied games.
Lacrosse scrimmages
