New Year's came early for the men's and women's track teams as the Tigers kicked off their seasons by hosting the New Year's Invitational on Sunday.
In a meet that featured local rivals, including Ivy foe Penn, Princeton took first place in several events on both the men's and women's sides.
The Tigers got a win from junior Ray Lenihan, who flew through the 60-meter hurdles in 8.23 seconds. Also dominant was the men's 4x400m relay team, made up of seniors Dan Antalics, Dwaine Banton and Solomon Barnett and junior Charles Ballew, who blazed around the new Jadwin Gym indoor track in 3:18.42 seconds. This time bested second-place Monmouth by more than five seconds.
While Princeton's runners did their part on the new track, the Tigers were equally successful off the ground. The home team was well represented in the pole vault, taking three of the top four positions. Junior Kyle Whitaker soared the highest, clearing 15 feet, seven inches to win. Princeton finished 1-2 in the high jump, displaying its depth along the way. Senior captain Mike Weishun won the event, clearing 6'9", and freshman Alex Willis made an impressive collegiate debut by jumping 6'6 3/4".
Not to be outdone, a Tiger also won the women's high jump. Senior Brooke Minor cleared 5'5" to win the event, edging athletes from Manhattan and Rutgers for the top spot. In other field events, senior Christi Niehans (pole vault), senior Jennifer Byrd (long jump) and freshman Marta Pardo (triple jump) all took second place.
Princeton's senior leadership extended from the field to the new track. Senior Caitlin Tormey went the distance for the Tigers in the mile, finishing in 5:13.26, while classmate Chanel Lattimer took second place in the 300m dash (40.83 seconds).
