In a dramatic turn of events the women's volleyball team claimed a share of the Ivy League title last night, with a dominant 3-0 win over Penn. Coupled with a 3-2 win by Yale over Brown, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard and Yale finished the Ivy League season in a four-way tie for first place. To determine who will receive the Ancient Eight's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, these four teams will participate in a mini-tournament next weekend at Union College. To get to this point, Princeton blitzed through a Penn squad that had denied them the Ivy League title last year on the final day of the regular season. Yesterday, the Quakers had no chance from the outset. The Tigers crushed the three-time defending champions, 30-23, in the first game. Princeton refused to let up in game number two. On the strength of junior outside hitter Lauren Grumet's serve — she won seven consecutive points in the middle of the game — the Tigers destroyed Penn, 30-21. In game three, Princeton found itself trailing, 24-21, but three sensational points later, the last on a great dig by freshman outside hitter Emily Turner and put away by junior setter Jenny Senske, the Tigers tied the game up. With Penn serving at 28-29, Senske backset Alex Brown, who slammed the ball down, giving Princeton its 13th Ivy League title. "We're all pressure players," senior middle blocker Catie Draper said. "Every time we lost this season, we put a little more pressure on ourselves, and we responded every time." Senior outside hitter Lauren Loban led the Tiger charge and was easily the player of the match. She led the team with a .282 hitting percentage and was second with 16 kills. She saved her best for the most important game of the season. "We are really playing with a lot of confidence," Draper said. "We are certainly peaking at the right time."
