W. hoops loses to Lehigh, preps for ACC

Despite Katy Digovich and Rebecca Brown putting up 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the women's basketball team, Princeton lost to Lehigh 64-15. Lehigh's Sara Ellis was simply too much for Princeton. She lit the Tigers up for a career-high five three-pointers. Princeton was not nearly as successful from three-point land, making just five of their 27 tries while the Mountain Hawks went 10-for-21.

The Tigers struggled from inside the arc as well. They made 43 percent of their shots, going 22-for-51 on the night. Two of the Princeton starters did not even score.

Freshman Meagan Cowher, who was just named Ivy League Rookie of the Week last week after notching 10 points and 10 rebounds in her college debut, gave another strong performance, scoring 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. But other than Digovich, Brown, and Cowher, the Princeton offense struggled. The only other three other Tigers who scored combined for a total of ten points.

At some point this holiday weekend, the women's basketball team might have a chance to sit back and reflect on what it's thankful for. Before then, there's the business of avenging home losses to attend to, and the hope that a freshman weapon can help make the difference.

The Tigers (1-0 overall) take their show on the road this weekend, traveling to meet a pair of undefeated Atlantic Coast Conference foes in Wake Forest (1-0) and Georgia Tech (1-0). They will be trying to get by two teams that defeated them on their home court last season. This time around, though, the Tigers will have Cowher.

Friday night the team will be in Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. The women's team, coming off a 12-17 year, might not be generating the same excitement and buzz that their No. 1 male counterparts are, but don't let the record fool you. The ACC is one of the toughest conferences in college basketball, and the Demon Deacons still embarrassed the Tigers, 58-41, last season in Jadwin Gymnasium. The Deacons utilize an unusual three-guard starting lineup and are led by junior guard Liz Strunk, a Second Team All-ACC team member last year who scored a game-high 25 in the team's first win this season, against Hampton.

Princeton will then travel to Atlanta, Ga., for a Sunday matchup with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets romped in their opening game of the season, beating Georgia State, 72-30. For the Tigers, this game will be a chance to erase the memories of last season's heartbreaking 67-66 loss at Jadwin. That game ended when a foul as time expired allowed then-senior Alex Stewart to convert on two free throws and give Georgia Tech the win. Tech boasts a solid lineup at every position this season, including junior center Kasha Terry, who had six blocks in addition to her nine points and 10 rebounds in the Yellow Jackets' first game.
