Same amount of goals, greatly different results.
That sums up the women's hockey team's weekend at Providence. Despite racking up four goals on Saturday, the Tigers (1-0-1) had to settle for a tie against the No. 10 Friars (3-2-1) on a last-minute goal with the goalie pulled. But on Sunday the Tigers again scored four, but this time in a 4-1 victory.
The Tigers were led by a strong effort from sophomore forward Kim Pearce, who score all four goals in the first game, and sophomore forward Liz Keady, who scored twice in the second game after earning an assist in the first.
Down 4-3 with time ticking away, the Tigers pulled junior goalie Roxanne Gaudiel to put another attacker on the ice, allowing Pearce to score the equalizer with just 33 seconds remaining.
Pearce had started the scoring in the first game in the 11th minute of the first period on a power play.
The Friars replied in the second period, scoring two before Pearce tied it up at 14:57.
In the third period Providence came out determined, as forward Kristin Gigliotti scored on a power play just 52 seconds in. Forward Rush Zimmerman then put the Friars up, 4-2, with her second goal of the game just two minutes later.
But Pearce was not done. At 6:54 she scored an even-strength goal on Keady's assist and then lit the lamp to tie the game with the goalie pulled.
In the second game, both teams came out slow, resulting in no scoring during the first period.
In the second period, the Tigers put themselves up for good on Keady's goal at 6:56 and a goal by sophomore forward Alison Ralph at 9:00.
The Friars responded just 39 seconds later with a goal by forward Sonny Watrous, but that proved to be all the offense that they could create as Gaudiel racked up 22 saves.
Sophomore defender Dina McCumber scored her first career goal in the fourth minute of the third period, and Keady added an empty-netter with just under a minute remaining to round out the scoring.
