Thanksgiving Break Previews

Men's basketball

After a disappointing loss to Wyoming on Monday night, the men's basketball team returns to action Saturday afternoon against Lafayette in Easton, Pa.

Princeton (1-2 overall) has already defeated one Patriot League squad this year, Bucknell, and, on paper at least, is favored to knock off the Leopards (1-1) as well. But the Tigers have faired poorly against Lafayette in recent years, losing four of the last six matchups between the two teams, including last year's contest at Jadwin Gymnasium.

In that game, Princeton led by 13 early in the second half before going cold from the field. Meanwhile, the Leopards got hot from the outside and used a 9-0 run to take the lead down the stretch. When junior point guard Scott Greenman's desperation three at the buzzer just missed, Lafayette escaped with a 47-44 upset win.

The Leopards picked up an 85-71 victory in this year's season opener against Duquesne on Saturday. Sophomore guards Marcus Harley and Jamaal Hilliard scored 19 and 15 points, respectively, to lead the way. Burly senior center Sean Knitter added 14 points and eight boards off the bench. Men's hockey

Men's hockey heads to New Haven this Saturday to face Yale (0-9-0 overall, 0-7-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League) in the second part of their fifth annual hame-and-home Thanksgiving series. A Princeton (4-4-1, 4-3-1) win would secure its first weekend sweep of the season.

Saturday's game will come down to power plays. Last night, Yale stayed close in a 6-3 loss in large part because of penalties. The Bulldogs scored two of their three goals while up a man. Princeton benefited from penalties as well, scoring three of its six goals on the power play.

The Tigers, however, have proven this season that they have the capability to learn from mistakes made in the previous game. Look for Princeton to play a much cleaner game on Saturday night in the rematch.

The Tigers may learn from mistakes, but they still have yet to string together two wins on the same weekend. This may prove to be the only thing Yale will have going for it in New Haven after the high-scoring loss last night.

Though Yale remains the only winless team in the nation, the Bulldogs pressed the Tigers hard in the first two periods of game one last night, outshooting them and clearly winning the possession battle. They were simply unable to capatalize in most instances. — Staff writer Mike Gallo

Women's hockey

The women's hockey team will play three games over Thanksgiving break, all of them in the friendly confines of Baker Rink.

Tonight, Princeton (4-3-1 overall, 2-2-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League) will play host to Ivy rival Yale (5-3-0, 4-2-0). The Elis are third in the ECACHL, three slots above Princeton. Senior defender Erin Duggan leads Yale with six goals. Look for her to be set up near the net by sophomore forward Kristin Savard, who is tied for the team lead with six assists.

This weekend, the Tigers will host Connecticut (5-3-3) for two games, the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday. The Huskies are paced by Jaclyn Hawkins who has 16 points this year on eight goals and eight assists. Tiffany Owens has contributed 11 points and six goals.

Sophomore forward Kim Pierce has led Princeton early in the year, with four goals. Sophomore forward Liz Keady, junior forward Heather Jackson and sophomore forward Laura Watt are all tied for the team lead with six points each.

In goal for the Tigers will be Roxanne Gaudiel who has a 2.11 goals-against average through eight games. Gaudiel is coming off an amazing performance against Mercyhurst in which she made 34 saves to preserve a 1-0 shutout win. — Staff writer Aaron Dent
