Squash may soon be the 39th club sport offered at the University.
The prospective team, organized by Luke Cohler '08, is still awaiting University approval.
Cohler said he wanted to start the club because he enjoys the sport but does not consider himself "varsity material."
Club Squash practices and matches could be easier to schedule than team sports that have to share fields.
"Princeton is unusual in that we have two squash courts, one for varsity and one for others," Cohler said. "So there would be no conflict among the two teams."
Cohler said he has more than 40 interested students and that he believes the team will be approved.
In order for squash to become an official club sport, Cohler must demonstrate the existence of a satisfactory amount of support for the team by having interested students sign a petition.
The list of signatures and his proposal would then be presented to the Committee of Club Sports during one of its monthly meetings.
"Not many people came to the meeting, but I got tons of emails," Cohler said.
Once the team is established, Cohler said he thinks the team will hold two mandatory practices each week.
Prospective opponents include the club teams from NYU, Columbia and Penn, and the varsity team from Haverford.
If approved, the club will be open to all undergraduates at the University.

Cohler said squash experience will not be a prerequisite to join.
"One guy [who will be playing with the team] used to play varsity here, but we also have one person who has never picked up a squash racket in her life," Cohler said.
Cohler also made the point that "especially since we're new, we're not going to be selective."
Cohler hopes that some more upperclassmen will express interest in joining since "75 percent of the people who have responded are frosh."
