Hitchcock visits Penn hockey

With the National Hockey League hopelessly mired in a prolonged lockout, professional players and coaches alike have had to find other activities to occupy their time. Some are pedalling their wares in Europe, some merely have taken extended vacations, and at least one coach has found his way to a college campus.

Princeton's hockey team made the news earlier this season when new head coach Guy Gadowsky announced that Philadelphia Flyers head coach Ken Hitchcock would join the Tiger staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Gadowsky knew Hitchcock from when both were in Edmonton and arranged the coaching situation earlier this fall.

An NHL coach for the past nine years, he has guided the two teams he has coached — the Dallas Stars and the Flyers — to the playoffs in every full season he has been at the helm. His experience and guidance were viewed as major acquisitions for a Princeton team looking to rebuild after winning only five games last season.

However, it appears that Hitchcock's loyalties do not lie solely with the Tigers. The week Princeton spent on Fall Break, Hitchcock visited the University of Pennsylvania men's club ice hockey team with Flyers captain Keith Primeau. Primeau's son plays for a travel youth team that Penn coach Dave Berger coaches, and Berger made the request that both men attend one of the Quakers' practices, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian.

However, no real conflicts of interest are inherent in Hitchcock's visit, as the Penn team only operates at the club level.
