For 44 minutes, senior guard Will Venable did everything he could to keep the men's basketball team (1-2 overall) in the game. But after he fouled out with 56 seconds left in the first overtime, the Tiger offense fell apart, and Wyoming (2-0) escaped with a 64-59 double overtime win last night in Laramie, Wyo.
Venable scored 17 points, all after halftime, but guard Steve Leven poured in 29 points to lead Wyoming. Point guard Jay Straight added 15 points and five assists.
The Cowboys took a 25-22 halftime lead thanks to a 9-0 run late in the first half and pushed it to seven shortly after the break.
But after the under-16 minute TV timeout, Venable singlehandedly willed the Tigers back into the game, scoring 15 of their 18 points over the next 12 minutes, pulling Princeton to within one point, 47-46, with under four minutes to play.
Twice down the stretch, senior center Judson Wallace scored on inbounds plays after Tiger timeouts, knotting the score at 49 the second time to force overtime.
The teams traded buckets in the first OT with a three by junior guard Scott Greenman putting Princeton up 57-55. But Cowboy center Alex Dunn drew Venable's fifth foul and drained both free throws to even it again. He finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
With Venable watching helplessly, Wyoming controlled play throughout the second overtime. The Tigers missed several threes that would have tied it and Leven iced the game with two final free throws. The Cowboys thrived at the charity stripe all day long, sinking 32-of-45 free throws, as three Princeton players fouled out.
