Frosh offered second chance to eat at clubs

Next week, the members of the Class of 2008 will be given another chance to sample dining at the eating clubs through "A Second Taste of Prospect," an event organized by the Inter-Club Council (ICC).

The 351 spots offered to freshmen were filled up less than two hours after an email was sent, said Grant Gittlin '08, president of the freshman class.

The popularity of "A Taste of Prospect," which occurred on Sept. 17, prompted the ICC to give freshmen one more opportunity to eat with upperclassmen.

This time, however, an online sign-up system was created to decrease the chance of error. Forbes students were mistakenly omitted from the first "Taste of Prospect."

"I took the entire list of the students from Forbes who were left off and I entered their names into the online signup," said J.W. Victor '05, ICC and Quadrangle Club president. "I gave them my word that they were to be included this time."

Priority was also given to students who signed up last time but did not receive a spot.

Students who had the opportunity to eat in September were able to sign up online until all of the slots were taken.

"The second Taste of Prospect will be during the week of November 14th - 19th. Each club is hosting a meal on the night that works best for them, so there should be no conflicts with members' nights or sophomore dinners," said Colonial Club president Tracy Solomon '05 in an email, who also contributed to the event's planning.

All 11 clubs will participate in "A Second Taste of Prospect," including Ivy Club, which was not involved in the first event.

The idea of "A Taste of Prospect" arose out of a meeting between the ICC and President Tilghman last semester, Solomon said.

Victor said he hopes that these events will "force frosh to make up their own minds instead of accepting good and bad stereotypes of the clubs and to break down some of the stigmas of the eating clubs."

Gittlin expressed gratitude toward those who helped plan the dinners. He is glad that freshmen will have another chance "to see the eating clubs out of the context of a Thursday or a Saturday night."

Solomon has hopes that the program will extend beyond these two events. "From the beginning, we had always hoped that 'A Taste of Prospect' would be popular enough to be repeated and become an ongoing program," she said. "If all goes well, we may be able to repeat the program in the spring."
