Disney film to feature University buildings

Blair Tower and DeNunzio Pool will appear in the Disney film "Annapolis," to be released in 2005 starring James Franco.

The scenes featuring the University were shot on campus Oct. 25.

The film does not take place at Princeton, but the University's locales were substituted for scenes at the Naval Academy.

"[The University] was used purely as a backdrop," Director of Communications Lauren Robinson-Brown '85 said. "It was a fairly simple shoot."

The University was chosen as the setting for "Annapolis," a film about boxing at the Naval Academy, because of its proximity to Philadelphia — where most production is taking place — and its beauty, publicist Katherine Orloff said.

"You shouldn't be able to recognize Princeton in the scenes," Orloff said, adding that temporary columns and a wall were placed near Blair Tower and lights were added to Denunzio Pool.

The filming of "Annapolis" was not a unique occurance. The University gets about one request each week either to film on campus or to use University items, such as clothing or diplomas, according to Robinson-Brown.

"We read the portions of the script with Princeton," said Assistant to the Director of Communications Thomas Bartus.

Filming is approved if it doesn't interfere with classes, Robinson-Brown said. "They're required to restore any damage to its original state, but we don't approve anything that wouldn't maintain Princeton's beauty."

If a filming idea is approved by the Office of Communications, the project is given conditional approval, and then logistical assistance by the Office of Conference and Event Services.

"More often than not we will either completely approve or decline the script, rather than change it," Robinson-Brown said.

Movies are prohibited from filming on the campus only when they misrepresent the University, Robinson-Brown said.

"We denied a movie where a group of Princeton students on an expedition unleash a demon which destroys all of mankind," Robinson-Brown said. "Princeton students are a bit smarter than that."
