Coalition for Peace Action to host annual conference

The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action, a grassroots organization dedicated to the abolition of nuclear weapons and international peace, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with events this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Several events lead up to the 25th Annual Conference and Interfaith Service for Peace on Sunday in the University Chapel. On Friday, a benefit concert will feature singer-songwriter David Brahinsky and there will be a gala including dinner and a reception with a silent auction and art exhibition on Saturday.

The Interfaith Service for Peace on Sunday will be led by Gwendolyn Zohorah Simmons, a religion professor at the University of Florida and the first Muslim to lead the annual service.

The 25th annual conference, titled "The Impact of the Media on War and Peace," will follow the service. Internationally renowned journalists will take part and MIT linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky will give the keynote address.

The Rev. Robert Moore, executive director of the coalition, said Chomsky will draw many people to the conference.

"He's a very profound analyst of the media, as well as being a gripping speaker," he said.

The coalition has been a part of many movements for peace and justice, including interfaith services, concerts for peace, lobbying Congress for halts to U.S. nuclear weapons testing and, in 2003, co-founding the New Jersey Coalition Against War in Iraq.

Moore said the coalition will continue to have a vital role in the national dialogue in the future.

Speaking of the coalition's stance against the war in Iraq, Moore said, "We can be a force for restraint even if we don't immediately succeed in the quest for peace."

Tickets are still available for Saturday's gala and Sunday's interfaith service and conference. Students can go to the coalition's website, www.peacecoalition.org, or call (609) 924-5022 for more information.
