Comedian to headline USG event

Comedian Lewis Black of Daily Show fame will be "Back in Black" — and orange — when he comes Oct. 17 to perform in Jadwin Gym.

The USG chose Black, who often draws his material from national politics, to impart comedic insight on the upcoming presidential election.

"As a very educated and very funny man, he presents a different viewpoint [on the November election]," said USG Social Chair Dan Pugliese '06.

Black, a stand-up comedian, is often featured on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central and is known for his segment "Back in Black."

Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. at Frist. Student tickets will be sold for $10, tickets for faculty and staff will cost $15 and community members will pay $25.

While many students did not recognize his name, some were excited to hear Black is coming to campus. Even those unfamiliar with his work were happy to hear that a comedian will be performing.

"I was just thinking we need more comedians to come to campus," Patrick Richardson '06 said.

Fans of the Daily Show were especially piqued.

"I'd be willing to watch anyone associated with Jon Stewart," said Laurie Williams'06.

Another factor in selecting Black was the success of Jon Stewart's speech at Class Day last year.

"The Daily Show is constantly cited as one of the highest sources of news for college students," Pugliese said. "People find it both pleasurable and also learn from it."

The event will be held in Jadwin Gym. Of the 3,500 available seats, 850 will be reserved for undergraduates. This is the first time Jadwin will be used for a USG event, Pugliese said.

Student seating will be closest to the stage, on the floor and in bleachers, Pugliese added. Other audience members will sit on the mezzanine and in the balconies.

USG events typically take place in Dillon Gym. Compared to Jadwin, which has the capacity for 4,100 spectators, Dillon is a much smaller venue, which can hold roughly 2,000 students. Pugliese said he wanted to try something different with the fall event so he explored different venues on campus.

Pugliese said he sought student input in selecting the USG Fall event. Though some students were enthusiastic about his choice, others were unsure whether they will attend.

"It would be great the week after midterms", said Sratha Saengsuwarn '07, who added that he is currently too busy to attend any shows.

Black "will have a lot of material to draw from," Pugliese said, as the event will take place four days after the third and final presidential debate.
