Junior Jay McCareins saved the football team last weekend in its 27-26 overtime win over Columbia. He had three tackles at his usual cornerback, but that was nothing compared to his contributions on offense and special teams.
With Princeton down 3-0 in the second quarter, McCareins made up for an interception from senior quarterback Matt Verbit by blocking a 33-yard field goal attempt.
Columbia was up by a field goal with 2 minutes, 11 seconds to go in the game and the Tigers again looked to McCareins.
He made three receptions on the final drive of regulation, including a first-down conversion on a fourth-and-six that kept Princeton's hopes alive. A field goal at the end of that drive forced OT.
When the Princeton defense allowed a quick Lion touchdown to open overtime, it looked like the Tigers could only hope to force a second overtime. But McCareins came through again, blocking Columbia's extra-point attempt and allowing Princeton to win the game following a touchdown run by senior tailback Jon Veach and an extra point from junior kicker Derek Javarone.
