W. crew teams dominate in Jersey; men's squads both fall

The women's and men's crew teams took on top national competition this past weekend, and came away with mixed results. Scattered across the Northeast, the women's top varsity boats celebrated the beautiful weather with victories, but the men's top varsity boats did not fare as well against their opponents.

The women's lightweight team headed to Camden, N.J., for the two-day Knecht Cup. The Tigers' top varsity boat edged out Harvard-Radcliffe and Wisconsin's A-boat in the grand final race. Coming in at seven minutes, 6.2 seconds, Princeton defeated both the Crimson and the Badgers by barely a boat length. Radcliffe won the close battle for second, clocking in just over two seconds later at 7:08.6, while Wisconsin finished at 7:08.9.

Sunday's win represented the women lightweights' second race of the spring season. The Tigers swept their competition at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic on Mar. 27-28.

The lightweight women travel to Boston, Mass. to face off against the Crimson again this Sunday.

The open weight women enjoyed a similarly narrow victory on Lake Carnegie last Saturday. Competing only against Yale, Princeton's top varsity eight came in at 6:14.4 to the Elis' 6:17.8. With the win the Tigers claimed the Eisenberg Cup.

They also maintained their season-long winning streak against other Ivy League crews — Princeton has not crossed the finish line behind any of the five Ivy crews it has faced.

In other open weight competition, Yale's boats finished ahead of the Tigers' in both the second varsity eight race and the varsity four race, but Princeton's two novice eight boats defeated the Elis' novice eight.

The open weight women look to continue their league success against Penn this weekend. Once again, they race at home on Lake Carnegie.

The two men's top varsity boats, however, did not experience the women's triumphs this past weekend.

The Cornell and Rutgers lightweight men came to Lake Carnegie looking to topple the Tigers on their home waters in the top varsity eight race.

Their intensity showed, as the Big Red led the way with a time of 5:43.1 and the Scarlet Knights edged out Princeton in a close battle for second place. Rutgers clocked in at 5:45.5, just over a second faster than the Tigers' 5:46.7. Princeton settled for third place.

The Tiger lightweights enjoyed more success in their two other races, however. The second varsity eight boat placed first out of the three, while the novice eights finished sandwiched between Cornell and the Scarlet Knights for second place.

The lightweight men return home for their next race on Saturday against Penn and Georgetown.

In men's heavyweight action, Harvard put on an impressive show on its territory, the Charles River. Princeton couldn't gain enough ground on the Crimson to earn a win in any of the three races, as Harvard swept the Tigers and MIT. The Compton Cup belonged to the defending national champions.

Princeton's top varsity eight boat came the closest to pulling off an upset. The Tigers pulled up close to the Crimson at the very end but could not pull hard enough to overcome the home crew. Princeton finished just 1.6 seconds behind Harvard, coming in at 5:47.4 to the Crimson's 5:45.8. The Beavers finished a distant third with a time of 6:22.3.

With perfect weather and ideal conditions, Harvard kept the Tigers at bay in both the second varsity eight and third varsity eight races. Princeton finished second in those races.

The Tiger novices followed suit, as both boats of freshmen came in second, as well. The first and second novice eights finished just over six and three seconds behind their Crimson novice counterparts, respectively.

The heavyweight men next travel to Derby, Conn., to challenge both Cornell and Yale this weekend.
