Men's heavyweight, women's open crew continue to impress

The men's and women's crew teams hosted races on Lake Carnegie this weekend and went two for three, getting wins in men's heavyweight and women's open but losing in men's lightweight.

Saturday morning, men's heavyweight crew maintained possession of the Logg Cup by running Rutgers out of the waters of Carnegie in Princeton's home opener.

The Tigers (3-1) won four of five heavyweight races against the Scarlet Knights, winning in all eight-man races and losing the four-man.

Princeton dominated in the top race of the day, winning in the varsity eight with a time of five minutes, 56.4 seconds to claim the cup. Rutgers was nowhere close, finishing over 10 seconds behind at 6:07.6.

The Tigers' second varsity eight claimed a somewhat tighter victory, finishing at 6:14.8. The Scarlet Knights came in just behind at 6:18.1. Princeton's third varsity boat also competed in the race, finishing at 6:30.3.

Both Princeton freshman boats also claimed easy victories. The top freshman/novice eight crew won by over a half minute, finishing at 6:19.6. Rutgers' boat came in at 6:53.6.

The Tigers' second freshman squad won with a time of 6:42.5, besting the Scarlet Knights' 7:18.6.

The only chink in Princeton's Logg Cup-winning armor came in the varsity four-man race. Rutgers took the event, beating what was the Tiger third varsity lightweight squad, with a time of 7:27.5. The Princeton team finished six seconds back at 7:33.4.

Things did not go quite so well Saturday for the defending Eastern Champion men's lightweight team, whose top boat beat Columbia but lost to Georgetown.

The Princeton varsity eight finished at 6:03.2, not quite three seconds behind Georgetown (6:00.8) and over 10 seconds ahead of Columbia (6:13.8).

Both the second varsity eight and freshman/novice eight boats for the Tigers were, however, able to capture victory. Princeton's second varsity boat finished at 6:11.3, good enough for an easy win over both Georgetown (6:20.2) and Columbia (6:34.3).

The rookies finished at 6:19.0 but had to fend off three other boats in the win. Columbia's top freshman boat finished at 6:25.1, and both Georgetown's first and second freshman/novice squads also competed, finishing at 6:32.2 and 6:41.3, respectively.

After an upset a week ago over top-ranked Brown, the No. 3 women's open crew team scored another victory Saturday on Lake Carnegie, improving to 3-1 by dominating Columbia and Rutgers.

The varsity eight won by over twenty seconds, finishing with a time of 6:43.0. The Lions narrowly edged out the Scarlet Knights for second place in the event, finishing at 7:03.3, just one second ahead of Rutgers.

Princeton dominated the rest of the event, too, as the second varsity eight, the freshman/novice eight, and the second freshman/novice eight all followed in the winning footsteps of the top team.

The second varsity eight had the closest win of the day for the Tigers, finishing at 7:08.1, over 12 seconds ahead of Rutgers (7:20.5) and Columbia (7:21.0).

The top rookie boat won with a time of 7:00.9, competing against only the Scarlet Knights, who finished in 7:26.5.

The Princeton lightweight team claimed the win in the second freshman race with a time of 7:20.0. The open crew's second rookie team finished in 7:30.6.
