Every pitcher's dream is to attain perfection even if they achieve it just once in their playing career. Sophomore hurler Erin Snyder was perfect on Saturday in softball's 1-0 win at Penn.
It was the first perfect game of Snyder's career and the first this season for the Tigers. The teams played eight innings, with the sophomore from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. striking out 10 of the 24 batters she faced. She allowed no hits, runs or walks, and she recorded five ground-outs to accompany nine fly outs.
Due to her outstanding effort, Snyder was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
What made the effort even more outstanding is that Snyder had missed the last six games due to an injury.
The squad entered the eighth inning with matching zeroes on the board. Junior catcher Ty Ries led off the top half of the inning with a single. She was replaced by freshman pinch runner Tiffany Wilson, who advanced to second on a bunt by freshman outfielder Tiffany Andras. Junior second baseman Kristin Lueke drove in the winning run with an RBI single.
Snyder (6-6) is one of the Tigers' two dominant aces along with junior hurler Melissa Finley. Snyder has an earned run average of only 2.12. She has already thrown two other shutouts and seven other complete games this season, throwing a team-high 72 2/3 innings. She has struck out 78 batters.
Last year Snyder burst onto the softball scene and won the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award. She was also a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection, successfuly filling the hole left by the graduation of Brie Galicinao '02 as the Tigers' ace. She worked 170 innings and had an ERA of only 2.69. She also had 199 strikeouts, the second highest total in Princeton history. She was Ivy League Pitcher of the Week twice.
For her performance, Snyder has been named 'Prince' Athlete of the Week.
