Many University students on Saturday are planning to leave the stresses and sleeplessness of midterm week to embark on spring break 2004. While some plan to travel to tropical islands, other adventure seekers will visit destinations as far away as Europe.
"I'm going to find some hot French men with wine, and have lots and lots of fun," Lindsay Lough '07 said.
She and her friend Maureen O'Connor '07 will make their second trip to Paris in two years. As of yet, the girls do not have a definitive itinerary. But they do hope to see the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and artwork by Dali and others at the Louvre.
Closer to home, Kean Tonetti '06 will spend her eight days of vacation riding horses and "being a hick" on her ranch in Austin, Texas. About ten of her friends from the University will be joining her. And on second weekend of break, they all are going to the Houston Rodeo.
Of course, many students are heading to tropical destinations, looking forward to sun and fun —including Tonetti's roommates Emily Sommerville '06 and Becky Brownboth '06.
Laura Garwood '07 and two of her friends are also going to paradise — more specifically, Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
Hugh Meighen '05 will also be heading south while spending break in the Dominican Republic with his family.
Unfortunately, Meighen's younger cousin, David Cape '07, will not be able to go along.
Cape will be on campus, training for crew. "I would love to spend spring break in the bosom of [Hugh's] loving family, but instead I will stay in Princeton and row twice a day for heavyweight men's crew."
Some Princetonians' plans to get away did not come easily. Clark Smith '07 said he had to encourage his friends for months before they organized a trip. For a while, he said he thought the small amount of cash he had available for the trip would not be sufficient for a fun break.
But after some careful planning, he and his friends will be spending break at friend Cody Sonntag's grandfather's home in Puerto Buerto, Mexico.
They plan to do various "tropical water sports, go deep sea fishing and play golf, though I'm not sure if we'll have time," Smith said.

Kavita Sangh '04 will also be under a time crunch this break. Rather than spending vacation on gorgeous sandy beaches Sangh will be typing her comparative literature thesis in the depths of Firestone Library.
" I wish I was going to Trinidad this break, instead of reading about it," Singh said. Her thesis will compare Franco and Anglo nationalist literature.
John Robinson '04 also has unrealized dreams of a Carribean vacation. Robinson must stay on campus to complete his "bigger than expected" thesis on U.S. trade with Israel, while many of his friends go to the Dominican Republic.
Though most students will not make it to paradise, they do plan to leave campus. On Saturday the undergraduate population will be just a fraction of its current size, leaving many thesis writers and athletes dreaming of warmer weather.
