The men's and women's golf teams each competed over Spring Break in their first tournaments of 2004. The women finished in second place out of 16 teams, and the men tied for eighth place out of 14 teams.
The women fought back from a sixth-place position after the first round of the El Diablo Invitational in Citrus Springs, Fla. The Tigers dropped five strokes off their first-round combined score of 316 to have the second-lowest second-round score at 311.
All but three teams had their best scores in the third and final round, and Princeton dropped its score to 305. That score was the third best on the day, and it drove the Tigers to a second-place finish, only 14 shots behind Western Carolina.
The top individual finisher for the women was freshman Sharla Cloutier, who shot a 12-over-par 228. Junior Avery Kiser finished in eighth place at El Diablo with a 14-over-par 230.
The men's team was not as successful as the women. At the Steve Kerr Invitational in Buckeye, Ariz., the Tigers started out on solid ground, sitting in seventh place after the first round. However, round two sunk the Tigers, and they were never able to come back. They finished the tournament at a combined 47-over-par 899.
Princeton had the worst team score in the second round with a 301. That was still a three-stroke improvement from the first round. Unfortunately for the Tigers, most of the other teams improved more. Even an amazing 294 combined score in the third round — the second-best score recorded in that round — was not enough to pull Princeton into the top half of the final standings.
Freshman John Sawin paced the Tigers, with a nine-over-par 222. His firstand third-round scores put him only three-over-par, but a devestating 77 in the second round kept him from being among the top few finishers. He finished tied for 19th place at the Steve Kerr. Junior Creighton Page finished one stroke behind Sawin.
The men will play in the George Washington Invitational next weekend, and the women will head to Virginia for the William & Mary Invitational.
