M., w. fencers post wins at Regionals

In order to qualify for the NCAA Championships which begin on Thursday, members of the men's and women's fencing squads first had to display their skills at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic South Regionals during the first weekend of Spring Break.

Two Tigers put on especially strong displays as they won their respective weapon groups. Sophomore Ben Solomon won the regional epee title, and sophomore Jacqueline Leahy finished first in foil. In a sport where the lower the score the better, Leahy had a total score of one — the lowest that a competitor can score. Solomon finished with a score of only 1.4.

Freshman Erin McGarry also had a strong showing in placing third in epee with a 3.2. Freshman Sarah Jew-Lim finished fifth in foil with a score of 6.2. Also on the women's side, freshman Mina Morova finished ninth in sabre with a score of 8.2.

All four women qualified for the NCAA Championships, which will be held at Brandeis University's Gosman Sports Center this Thursday through Sunday. Each weapon has 24 competitors and will begin with a round-robin tournament of five-touch bouts. Only the top fencers in each weapon advance to a direct elimination round.

On the men's side, Solomon automatically qualifed for the tournament.

Joining Solomon in the epee bracket is sophomore Fenil Ghodadra. He came in seventh at regionals with a score of 7.8. Freshman Alejandro Bras and senior Eric Stodola also qualified for the tournament with their performances. Both will be competing in foil after placing ninth and 11th, respectively. Bras finished with a score of 9.0, and Stodola scored only 0.8 points higher.
