Kroshus, Ferrell exceed expectations at NCAAs

While most students spent the week before Break preparing for a relaxing spring vacation at the beach, senior Emily Kroshus and sophomore Cack Ferrell were busy preparing for a trip to Fayetteville, Ark., this year's site of the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Kroshus and Ferrell were the sole Princeton representatives at the meet, which held both men's and women's events. Kroshus qualified for the 5,000-meter event with a time of 16 minutes, 15.54 seconds, which placed her as the 12th seed. Ferrell qualified for the 3,000m event with a 9:20.89, which was good enough for a 15th place seed.

Both runners surpassed their seedings. Kroshus finished 7th in the 5,000m run with a final time of 16:08.17. Ferrell took 11th in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:18.17. Both runners convincingly bettered their respective qualifying times.

The meet was the finale of what has been a spectacular season for both runners.

Kroshus entered the NCAA Championship Meet with an impressive individual victory at last week's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. Kroshus took the Ivy League 5,000m title with a time of 16:45.13. The senior has been outstanding all year, dominating the 3,000m event throughout the season. Kroshus also took the individual honors at the Harvard-Yale-Princeton Meet.

The NCAA Championship was the final collegiate indoor meet for Kroshus, who will graduate this spring after a final season of outdoor track.

Ferrell, who has been strong all year, impressed everyone at the Ivy League Championships. The sophomore was named the Female Athlete of the Meet after winning both the 3,000m event and the mile. Ferrell took the 3,000m in 9:38.34 and the mile with a time of 4:50.88.

The exemplary individual performances of Kroshus and Ferrell mark an auspicious transition to the Outdoor Track season. As a team, Princeton finished second overall in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The Tigers hope to continue their track success at home, starting with the Sam Howell Invitational which will be held at Princeton.
