Wrestling drops three matches, falls to 0-4 in league standings

The wrestling team journeyed to Cambridge, Mass. and Providence, RI this weekend to face off against Harvard, East Stroudsburg and Brown. The Tigers dropped to 0-4 in Ivy League competition and 2-8 overall with losses in all three matches.

Finding themselves up against the Crimson on Friday, the Tigers quickly fell behind and were unable to regain their footing for the remainder of the match as Harvard sailed to its first victory of the season. The Crimson ousted the Tigers 22-10, rebounding from their loss last season. The Tigers proceeded to drop their second meet of the day to East Stroudsburg 27-16.

Junior Jack Fleming started off the match in the 174 lb weight class, falling in a close match of 7-5 to Eddie Jones and allowing Harvard to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Jake Butler fell in a major decision in the 197 lb class to Reggie Lee. Harvard continued to dominate the match as senior co-captain Joe Looke lost to Bode Ogunwole in a late takedown with only a minute remaining in his match.

Senior co-captain Kenny Chu provided Princeton's first win of the day, taking the 125 lb class against Brent Kakesako 9-5, and senior co-captain Brian Kirschbaum took his match against Greg Cook 13-2 in the 133 lb class to bring Princeton to 13-7 against the Crimson. The Tigers needed a win from senior co-captain Milo Adams in the 141 lb class to have a chance in the meet, yet Max Meltzer beat Adams 8-4 to make the overall score 16-7. The No. 1 wrestler in the country, Jesse Jantzen of Harvard, sealed the deal a minute later, pinning sophomore Matt Piselli of the Tigers in the 149 lb class in 57 seconds.

The Tigers fared no better against East Stroudsburg. Looke earned a pin in the heavyweight class against Stanley Foster in three minutes and 20 seconds, as did Kirschbaum in 2:02 in the 133 lb class. Adams added a major decision to the Tigers' record in the 141 lb class, beating ESU's Tyler Rapp 17-6. However, Chu was pinned in the 125 lb class in 0:30, as was Wiggins in the 157 lb class in 1:37.

Saturday found the Tigers in Providence as they faced off against Brown, hoping to gain a win in Ivy League competition and add to their overall wins on the season. However, it was not to be for the Tigers as they fell to the Brown Bears 28-12.

The match began badly and saw little improvement for the Tigers as Wiggins lost the 157 lb class 17-5, DeNicholo lost the 165 lb class 9-4, and senior Allen Sista fell in the 184 lb class 13-3.

Kirschbaum, Hawrilenko, and Looke provided the only wins for the Tigers against the Bears, not enough to catch up to Brown's substantial lead. Hawrilenko won the 197 lb class 6-3 and Looke won the heavyweight class 6-3. Kirshbaum completed the perfect weekend, winning his third and final match of the weekend with a fall over Dan Appello at 2:59 in the 133 lb class.
