W. track speeds by Harvard and Yale

The women's track team beat Harvard and Yale in a tri-meet this weekend at Harvard's Gordon Track. The men's team placed eighth in a national open meet at Penn State. Both teams will use the meets' momentum to gear up for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships.

The women's team edged the Elis by a single point, scoring 60 points to Yale's 59. Harvard finished a distant third with 40 points.

"The win was marked by performances you didn't expect," head coach Peter Farrell said. "There were a lot of cases where someone snuck into fourth place to get that extra point."

The Tigers dominated the 3000-meter run. Senior Emily Kroshus won the event in a time of nine minutes, 21.5 seconds, followed closely by sophomores Cack Ferrell and Meredith Lambert and freshman Claire Filloux, who came in second through fourth, respectively.

Kroshus' time broke the Princeton record for the 3000m run, formerly held by Lynn Jennings '83, who went on to win a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics.

Freshman Catha Mullen won the mile run in 4:53.36 in a tight race. Junior Randy Buzzell came in second and junior Carrie Strickland in third, but both finished within a second of Mullen.

Other notable performances include the 4x400m relay, which the Tigers won, and the 400m dash, won by senior Hasina Outtz with a time of 57.95 seconds. Sophomore Molly Jones won the triple jump with 11.45m, and sophomore Annie Santi came in second at 10.43m.

"I think that it was a great meet with some impressive individual performances in a lot of different areas," Outtz said. "Being able to beat both Harvard and Yale should give us the confidence to know what we are capable of and will definitely raise some eyebrows around the league. We are coming together as a team and are poised to make some noise at Heps."

Next up for the women is the Princeton Invitational at Jadwin on Saturday, followed by Heps the following weekend.

The men's team competed in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn St. this weekend, facing a strong field of nine teams. The Tigers finished eighth but saw several strong individual performances.

The meet featured several national powerhouses, including No. 2 Michigan, No. 14 Kent State, No. 19 Cornell and No. 21 Penn St.

"The meet was a great way to see teams outside of the Ivy League," senior Pete Cioni said.

The Tigers were led by junior Austin Smith, who finished third in the 3000m run with a time of 8:15.91, just over a second behind the winner. Sophomore Frank Macreery came in fourth in the 5000m run, finishing in 14:27.69.

"Ultimately, the meet offered us the opportunity to race against competitive teams on a world-class track," Macreery said. "With teams from the Ivy League and the Big 10 in attendance, we were able to gauge our fitness against both familiar and unfamiliar teams."

The Tigers also saw a strong performance from their distance medley relay team, which placed third and was anchored by junior Alexis Tingan. The 4x400m relay team, anchored by junior Mike Kopp, finished fourth.
