Reverend Craig Stephen White, better known as "Brother Stephen," whose sometimes virulent preaching along Washington Road earned him notoriety among University students, was convicted on Jan. 14 of multiple charges stemming from a sexual offense committed against a minor last June, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
A Pennsylvania jury found the 40-year-old White guilty of all charges, which included solicitation to commit involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, solicitation to commit prostitution, attempting to lure a child into a vehicle and corruption of minor, according to the Inquirer. The trial, which began last November, took place in West Chester, Penn., near Philadelphia, where White resides.
White pleaded not guilty to allegations that on June 26 of last year, he drove up to a boy and asked for directions to any strip clubs or adult bookstores nearby.
When the boy ignored him, White left momentarily, only to return several minutes later with an offer to pay the boy for receiving oral sex from him, police told the 'Prince' in October.
The boy declined and memorized the vehicle's license plate number, which police traced to Gospel Outreach Center, White's youth ministry in Philadelphia, police told the 'Prince'.
Some upperclassmen familiar with White's preaching expressed shock at the conviction, but were relieved that he would no longer be spreading his message.
"Brother Stephen . . . distorted the Gospel," said Katie Lu '05, adding that White called passersby sinful and claimed they were "destined to go to Hell."
White also preached on the campuses of the University of Pennsylvania as well as Rutgers and Drexel universities.
Attempts to reach White's ministries for comment were unsuccessful. His Pennpreacher.org Web site has said only that it is "under construction" for several months.
The Inquirer reported that the site once included a list of celebrities that White predicted to be doomed to hell.
According to West Chester police detective Stanley Billie, White will be sentenced on March 10 to a minimum of three years in the Chester County Prison.
