Spencer Gloger '05 is back at Princeton — again. It is still unclear, however, whether he will ever step back on the court for Princeton.
The former men's basketball star, who has not been enrolled at Princeton the past two semesters after being declared academically ineligible in February of 2003, is back at school and enrolled for the spring semester. According to NCAA guidelines, he would be eligible to beginning practicing with the team today.
Gloger declined to comment on whether he will resume his basketball career. Teammates were unsure of his plans and said that head coach John Thompson '88 has not addressed Gloger's status with the team.
In early January, Thompson seemed unconcerned with his return.
"If it happens, it happens. My focus is on the guys who are here," Thompson said.
The strange odyssey began during the 1999-2000 season, when Gloger averaged 12.0 points a game as a freshman. But after that year, in the wake of former head coach Bill Carmody's departure, the California native transferred to UCLA.
After sitting out the 2000-2001 season at UCLA as a transfer, Gloger returned to Princeton as a sophomore during the 2001-2002 school year, during which he was ineligible to play for a second straight year.
Gloger's second stint on the court included the first 20 games of the 2002-2003 season. Before leaving the team, he was the Tigers' leading scorer, averaging 15.0 points per game.
Although he is academically a junior, this is his last season of basketball eligibility, whether or not he plays.
