Federal student aid could be illegal
In "University should lead charge to end welfare for elites" (Tuesday, Nov. 11), Tom Hale states "It is important for the federal government to help everyone pay for the rising cost of college."
This begs the question of whether it is even APPROPRIATE for the federal government to help everyone pay for college. One of the cliches in the teaching of American history is that the Constitution created a central government of limited powers. I'm no scholar, but I can't find anything in the Constitution that authorizes the federal government to help ANYone pay for college. Terry Wintroub '69
Partial birth abortion is unavoidably gory
Re: "Liberal cowardice puts the right to choose at risk" (Monday, Nov. 3):
Though Ms. Reilly's vigorous defense of a woman's right to a partial birth abortion doubtless comes from a genuine concern for women, it is difficult to find medical justification for late term abortions. Even the generally pro-choice American Medical Association can find little to defend about this risky procedure. On their website, they say as much:
" . . . the AMA recommends that abortions not be performed in the third trimester except in cases of serious fetal anomalies incompatible with life. Although third-trimester abortions can be performed to preserve the life or health of the mother, they are, in fact, generally not necessary for those purposes. Except in extraordinary circumstances, maternal health factors which demand termination of the pregnancy can be accommodated without sacrifice of the fetus."
And this does not even begin to address the rights of the fetus. While Ms. Reilly may object to Republicans in cowboy boots holding up pictures of bloodied fetuses for shock value, that does not make their graphic descriptions or "fuzzy ultrasounds" any less true. Third trimester abortions involve — and here again I quote directly from the AMA website — "deliberate dilatation of the cervix; instrumental or manual conversion of the fetus to a footling breech; breech extraction of the body excepting the head; and partial evacuation of the intracranial contents of the fetus to effect vaginal delivery of a dead but otherwise intact fetus."
I agree with Ms. Reilly that those on both sides of this issue should avoid propaganda, but for anyone seeking to get at the bottom of this matter graphic descriptions are unavoidable. All of us, as citizens, have a responsibility to know exactly what this procedure entails. Ellen Charles '06
