Avery Kiser advances to match play of U.S. Women's Amateur

Playing in her second U.S. Women's Amateur, junior Avery Kiser, the two-time Ivy League medalist, advanced to the first round of match play before losing to Hsiao-Ching Liu, 2 and 1.

Kiser, also a competitor in the 2002 U.S. Women's Amateur, one of 13 championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, failed to make match play in that event, but strung together two good rounds amid wet conditions at Philadelphia Country Club this past August.

Kiser combined scores of 72 and 74 on the 6,386-yard, par-71 course, and advanced to match play as the 15th seed, where she was matched against Liu, a teenager from Chinese Taipei. The junior squandered a 1-up lead after nine holes and eventually lost the match, 2 and 1.

Kiser and her teammates travel to Dartmouth this weekend to compete in the Dartmouth Invitational, the golf team's first event of the fall.

Smith '03 receives ITA/Arthur Ashe Award

Trevor Smith '03 did a lot for Princeton in his time here. Most knew him as the No. 1 singles player on the men's tennis team.

But this past August, Smith received an award that recognized his far larger contributions. Smith received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award at the ITA Collegiate All-Star Awards Ceremony less than a month ago.

The award is presented to the person that has best exhibited the qualities of leadership and sportsmanship both on and off the court. The award factors in an athlete's extracurricular activities, scholastic achievement and, of course, athletic achievement.

Kristin Stubbs, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, received the award on the ladies' side.

Becker '03 named a finalist for Sportswoman of the Year

Rachael Becker '03, a four-year letterwinner on the women's lacrosse and field hockey teams, and the 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy winner as the top women's lacrosse player in the country, was recently named as a finalist for the Women's Sport's Foundation's 2003 Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The 2003 Ivy League Player of the Year, Becker, a defender, helped lead the women's lacrosse team to consecutive national championships. A first-team All-America selection three times, she won the 2003 Honda Award for lacrosse and was co-winner of the C. Otto von Kienbusch award as the University's top senior female athlete.

As a nominee for Sportswoman of the Year, Becker is in elite company. She is one of nine team sport finalists for the award, the winner of which will be honored at the Awards Oct. 20 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
