PHILADELPHIA — Similar to the Yankees winning on opening day while losing shortstop Derek Jeter, men's lacrosse suffered a similar fate yesterday as junior attack and captain Ryan Boyle injured his hamstring late in the third quarter against Penn at Franklin Field.
Boyle, who tallied five assists in the Tigers' 12-6 win, was making a move towards the goal when he pulled up short just before releasing his shot with three minutes and 37 seconds left in the period.
The win marks the 68th victory in the Tigers' last 71 Ivy contests and extends their winning streak to five games. They have also beaten the Quakers 14 consecutive times.
Princeton (5-2 overall, 2-0 Ivy League), ranked No. 2 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, struggled with the Quakers for all of the first half and well into the third quarter. Penn scored with six minutes, 17 seconds left in the third quarter to narrow the Tigers' margin to one goal.
Double whammy
Princeton won the ensuing face-off, and 12 seconds later Boyle found sophomore attack Jason Doneger for a goal. Just 39 seconds after that, Boyle fed another assist to senior attack Sean Hartofilis whose goal raised Princeton's lead to 9-6.
The Tigers would score three more to give Princeton the 12-6 win.
"The good news is that we won the game," head coach Bill Tierney said. "The bad news is that you can't think you can always turn it on when you have to."
Midfield scoring, which was Tierney's biggest concern entering the Ivy season, has been spectacular thus far — with yesterday's game no exception. Senior midfielder Josh White added three goals and an assist for the Tigers, and the midfield scored nine of the Tigers 12 goals yesterday.
Senior midfielder Matt Trevenen moved up to replace Boyle after he left the field.
"Hopefully [Boyle] won't be out for too long," Trevenen said. "[Boyle's] the biggest part of our offense."
Boyle, the team's points leader, will not play Friday at home against Quinnipiac.
