Yasser El-Halaby: national champ

After leading his team to No. 2 in the nation in men's squash, Yasser El Halaby claimed the one thing that had been missing from an incredible freshman season: the Intercollegiate Squash Association Individual Championship.

In the end, it came down to a battle between two teammates. El Halaby, ranked No. 1 in the nation, had only lost one match in the 2002-03 season, to Trinity's Bernardo Samper. El Halaby had worked his way into the final match, where a fellow Tiger, senior No. 3 Will Evans, was waiting for him. In a collegiate battle of rookie versus veteran, El Halaby gave up only five points in his 3-0 victory.

"It was kind of weird [to beat Evans in the finals]. He's my captain and all," El Halaby said.

Weird or not, a national championship in his freshman year points to a promising career for the young Egyptian athlete.
