In an effort to gear up for the outdoor track season, the men's track traveled to Florida, and the women to California.
The men concluded a week of training by heading north to temperate Myrtle Beach to compete at the Coastal Carolina Relays. The throwers highlighted the performance, with five individuals posting qualifying marks for the NCAA regional championships to be held in late May.
Junior Tim Releford won the javelin with a throw of 223-6 meters, a personal best by over 6m. Junior Josh McCaughey won the hammer throw in 198-8m, while classmate Mark Smith posted a personal best to also qualify for the regional championship, with a toss of 185-9m, good for second place. Sophomore Paul Lyons won the shot put with a throw of 56-6m, while junior Rocky Craley placed second with a put of 54-1m.
"All the throwers posted significant personal improvements," McCaughey said. "This meet started the season off on the right foot."
Also in the field, junior Marcus Ford-Bey won the triple jump with a leap of 14.23m. Senior Javius Wynn placed third in the hurdles at 14.84 seconds.
Senior John Karakoulakis ran especially well in the 400m, with a 4th place time of 48.60s. The distance-running contingent endured a grueling, high mileage week of training, which was reflected in the quality of performances recorded. Notable was freshman Frank McCreery placing second in his collegiate steeplechase debut, with a time of nine minutes, 38.06 seconds. Junior Jeff DiChiara was victorious in the 5000m, recording a time of 15:08.
Meanwhile the women's team jaunted to Long Beach, Calif. to participate in the Long Beach Collegiate Classic, where several Tigers won their events.
Junior Hasina Outtz continued her streak of strong performances in the hurdles, winning the 400m with a time of 1:00.80 and placing second in the 100m. Fellow junior teammate Jenn Byrd placed fifth in the 400m and seventh in the 100m.
Junior Betsy Kennedy won the javelin, taking the title with a mark of 127-03m.
In addition, several Princeton distance runners achieved success in the 1500m race. Freshman phenom Cack Ferrell won the event, crossing the finish line in 4:35.29, and sophomore Carrie Strickland had a stellar day moving up from her usual 800m distance, finishing third with a time of 4:37.48. Junior Emily Kroshus placed fifth with a time of 4:38.91.
The Tigers ended fourth overall in the meet, just behind Long Beach State, Weber State, and eventual champion Cornell.
