M., w. track use Princeton Invitational to relax, heal

With Alumni Day festivities occupying Jadwin Gymnasium, the final indoor home meet of the season for both the men's and women's track and field teams was relegated to the posh facilities of Lawrenceville Prep, four miles down Route 206.

The Heptagonal Championship, an antiquated name for the championship contested by the Ivy League and Navy, are this upcoming weekend and as such, the past weekend's competition was downplayed. Some athletes ran off-events as a final tune up. Athletes who missed early season competition due to injury or illness used the meet as a last chance to get in racing shape.

To those athletes who did not make the Heps travel squad, this meet represented an anti-climatic culmination to the indoor season.

In the non-team scored event, Princeton posted a combined 11 victories between the men's and women's teams.

Junior thrower Josh McCaughey was victorious in the 35 pound weight throw, with a distance of 62-10.75, while classmate Rocky Craley put the shot 56-0 to tally another win.

Freshman vaulter Kyle Whitaker flew 15-.25 to win the pole vault. Sophomore Derek Davis won the long jump with a leap of 22-2.25. Sophomore sprinter Dwayne Banton won the 55m dash in a time of 6.59. With most of the freshman class shaving their heads as a training ritual, the nicely coiffed freshman Adam Ludwig won the 3000m in a time of 8 minutes 37.5 seconds.

The distances events drew a particularly weak fields as between the highly contested meets at Penn State, the Armory and the impending Heptagonal Championships, a week of uninterrupted training was needed.

On the women's side, many of the distance runners had the weekend off. Junior Pilar Marin, who will compete in the mile next weekend, stepped down the 800m to test her speed out and recrded a personal best of 2:19.9. Junior Kate Reid continued her remarkable trend of improvement in running 5:03, out-kicking teammate and classmate Laura Petrillo. As with Marin, Petrillo was stepping down in distance, given that she will compete in the 5000m at Heps.

The jumpers looked particularly impressive, with junior Lauren Washychyn winning the long jump, freshman Molly Jones winning with triple jump and junior Chelo Canino winning with pole vault. Junior Dalia Bach heads into the Heptagonal pole vault competition having vaulted a personal best 10-6.

Sophomore Chanel Lattimer, who places third in the League at 200m as a freshman, won the 200m dash in a time of 25.84. Junior Liz Morse, one of the top ranked preps in the nation over 800m, has chosen to help the team by concentrating on the sprints and the 4x400m relay this indoor season. She won the 400m at Lawrenceville in a time of 57.42, narrowly edging classmate Hasina Outtz.

The Tigers prepare for next weekend's Heptagonal Champ-ioship at Dartmouth and then the ECAC Championships a week later in Boston. After Princeton's poor performance at the H-Y-P tournament, the Heps Championships will be a good chance to redeem themselves.
