Ranked in top 10, w. hockey faces tough tests over break

Women's hockey will spend its holiday on ice, getting acquainted with some teams outside the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Ohio State stops by for a pre-Christmas visit this weekend, and after the holiday, No. 8 Princeton (7-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 ECAC) will begin 2003 on the road at Boston College and Providence.

The Buckeyes (5-9-2, 4-6-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) come to Baker Rink for a pair of games this weekend.

Unlike the Tigers' balanced scoring attack, Ohio State relies mainly on a quartet of attackers. Jeni Creary (eight goals, 11 assists) is the most prolific scorer Princeton will see over break. Emma Laaksonen (3g, 11a), Jennifer Desson (5g, 5a), and Jana Harrigan (5g, 4a) provide a powerful backup.

Goalie Natalie Lammé and April Stojak have split time in net for the Buckeyes this season. Lammé is 2-3-1 with a 2.43 goals against average. Stojak is 3-6-1 with a 2.71 GAA.

After the holiday break, Princeton travels to Boston College to take on the Eagles (6-5-1, 0-2-1 Hockey East) Jan. 4.

Boston College has taken the Tiger approach and has spread the scoring out this year. Alaina Clark, Jaclyn Kryzak, and Kerri Sanders are all tied for the team lead in scoring with ten points each. Clark and Lindsey Bazzone lead the team with six goals each, and freshman Jill McInnis leads with seven assists.

The Eagles also split time in net between two goalies. Freshman Alison Quandt is 3-1-0 in six starts with one shutout and a 2.10 GAA. Sophomore Lisa Davis is 2-3-1 in seven starts with a 3.05 GAA.

While the bulk of the student body returns to campus on Jan. 5, Princeton will wrap up its holiday play with a trip to Providence to take on the sixth-ranked Friars (9-4-3, 4-0-1 Hockey East).

The highest scoring team the Tigers will face over break, Providence has seven skaters in double figures for points. Senior Jenn Butsch leads the team in scoring with 19 points on eight goals and a team-high 11 assists, and sophomore Rush Zimmerman is right behind her with 18 points on a team-high 10 goals and eight assists.

Freshman goalie Jana Bugden has played 13 games in net for the Friars, accumulating a 7-3-2 record with two shutouts and just 22 goals against for a 1.84 GAA.

The Tigers are led by senior forward Andrea Kilbourne's 12 points on four goals and eight assists, and only two other players — sophomore forward Rebecca Stewart and junior defender Angela Gooldy —join her in double figures. Junior forward Gretchen Anderson, who has played in just six games this season due to injury, already leads the team with five goals.

Thirteen Tigers have registered points this season, but none have more than five goals or eight assists.

Junior Megan Van Beusekom and senior Sarah Ahlquist have switched off in goal for most of Princeton's minutes. Van Beusekom is 4-3-1 with a 2.29 GAA. Ahlquist is 2-0-1 with an 0.88 GAA.

Princeton's game has been about defense this season. In 12 games, the Tigers have allowed just 23 goals but have scored just 37 —both totals are fewer than any of their break opponents.

Ohio State and Boston College are each allowing just under three goals per game, and Princeton is 5-1 when scoring three goals or more.

Providence, however, is allowing fewer than two per game, and the Tigers are just 2-2-2 when scoring two or less.

Winter break gives Princeton one last chance to warm up before the bulk of the ECAC season starts, when the team will make a run at the conference crown.
