Women's squash

The women's squash team shut out Brown Saturday in Providence, R.I. At No. 1, freshman Ruchika Kumar continued to shine, topping the Bears' Lillian Rosenthal 9-2, 9-3, 9-1. The only reasonably close match was at No. 6, where the Tigers' Anne Warner needed five games to win.

The men's squash team also blanked Brown in Providence Saturday. The Tigers were missing David Yik to illness but still dominated the Bears. Senior Will Evans dropped the first two games of his match against Ben Holiner at No. 1, 3-9 and 0-9, but came back to win the final three games, 9-4, 9-2 and 9-0, seeming to get stronger as the match went on.

Between the other eight players, Princeton gave up just three games in the sweep. The Tigers remain undefeated in the Ivy League — they won the conference last season — and don't play again in the Ancient Eight until Jan. 29, 2003 against rival Penn.

Men's and women's track

550 athletes from 14 teams, including Princeton, Penn and Columbia, competed at the New Year's Invitational this weekend in Jadwin Gym. The meet was not team scored, but it helps individuals know how they stack up against other athletes early in the indoor track season.

Some of the women's team's top peformers included junior Hasina Outtz in the 55 meter hurdles, who was second at 8.46 seconds, and sophomore Carrie Strickland in the 1000 meter, where she won the race with a time of three minutes, 1.49 seconds. Freshman Lindsay Cole was third in the same event, finishing 6.5 seconds off Strickland's pace.

In the 500, junior Liz Morse finished second with a time of 1:16.63. Sophomore Brooke Minor jumped as high as Kerry Ann Mitchell of Rutgers, who won the high jump, but Mitchell took fewer tries. The Tigers' Meredith Mante won the pole vault at 3.35 meters, beating out junior Daila Bach, who finished at 3.05 m.

On the men's side, junior Dan MacKensie and freshman Adam Ludwig went one-two in the 3000 meter. The Tigers' 4x400 relay team won the event by seconds over Rutgers and junior Rocky Craley won the shot put at 16.39 meters. Junior Josh McCaughey was second in the 35-lb weight throw at 19.3 m.
