W. swimming starts season with four dual-meet wins, streak at 36

Riding a streak of 32 straight dual-meet wins over three seasons, the three-time defending Ivy League champion women's swimming team entered the 2002-2003 season full of hope for Ivy League and national success.

The squad opened up against Boston College, who the Tigers have soundly defeated in their opening meets the past two years. The team similarly began this year's campaign with a 185-133 blowout, winning nine of 17 events including four sweeps.

Senior Molly Seto, freshman Libby Engelmeier, and junior Lisa Battaglia went 1-2-3 for the first sweep of the day in the 100-yard backstroke. In the 200 backstroke, Engelmeier, junior Cara Goeller and freshman Katie Sibert completed another sweep.

The team essentially clinched victory by sweeping the 500 freestyle, with sophomore Amy Jones winning and fellow sophomores Nicole Somers and Courtney Green finishing second and third, respectively.

The team began Ivy League competition Saturday against Cornell and Penn, easily defeating the Big Red, 213-84, and the Quakers, 255-70.

The Tigers swept the first four places of the 400 individual medley and the 200 freestyle. Freshman Whitney Ryan won the individual medley, as Engelmeier, junior Sarah Frauman and classmate Stephanie Wright finished 2-3-4 to complete the sweep. In the 200-yard freestyle, Jones finished first in front of freshman Eileen Altenburger, sophomore Stephanie Hsiao and senior Meagan Donahue.

On the diving board, senior Kristy Wilson won the three-meter dive and took second on the one-meter. As a result of her performance, Wilson qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving championships.

The squad further extended the lead later in the meet by winning events five through seven, the 100 backstroke, the 50 freestyle, and 100 freestyle.

The Tigers defeated Brown the next day, 160-125, winning nine of the 17 events on the day. Princeton started the season off on the right foot, winning the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, with seniors Michelle Nielson, Chrissy Holland, and Seto, and sophomore Chrissy Macaulay.

Later, in the 100 backstroke, the Tigers went 1-2-3-4, as Holland won, and junior Lauren Rossi, Ryan, and junior Meredith Saylor finished 2-3-4.

Altenburger won the 200-yard fly, and Seto captured the 50-yard free to extend the Princeton lead. "We've worked really hard. To come so far so fast is really exciting," coach Susan Teeter said.

At 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the Ivy League, the Tigers are the clear favorite to capture the league title and further extend their dual-meet winning streak, now at 36 straight meets.
