A U-Store employee was arrested last week for stealing and aiding the theft of more than $4,000 in cash and merchandise in what is suspected to be an extended network of such crimes.
Borough Police charged Cherisse Iverson-Russell of Ewing with theft by deception after she allegedly voided customers' transactions, keeping their money, and allegedly let accomplices take merchandise without paying, Borough Police Lt. John Reading said.
Contacted at home, Iverson-Russell declined to comment.
Police also charged Iverson-Russell's alleged accomplice, Angeline Newsome, also of Ewing, with leaving the U-Store with merchandise she did not purchase.
Iverson-Russell was released on $500 bail. Newsome was released on $350 bail.
Borough Police investigated Iverson-Russell after U-Store security became suspicious of her activities. Security personnel had watched Iverson-Russell and noticed that she let a man carrying women's apparel to pass her register without paying, Reading said.
"She would have friends or accomplices go through her aisle without paying," Reading said. "It's an ongoing investigation . . . there are additional people [involved]."
Virginia France, U-Store marketing director, declined to comment on the specific case because Borough Police and U-Store security suspect additional accomplices. However, she stressed the gravity of the crime.
"We do take theft seriously, whether by employees or others," France said. "And we do prosecute."
France said the U-Store has an internal "loss prevention staff" whose members do not wear uniforms and who patrol the store.
There have been thefts at the U-Store in the past, but usually they involve students shoplifting small items or textbooks.
Last February, police reported two shoplifting thefts and one burglary at the store. Two students were charged with shoplifting, and in one incident, someone in a ski mask broke into the U-Store and stole nearly $1,000 in hand-held computers.
Employees have been involved in incidents of theft in the past, France said.
"There's always a few bad apples," she said.
Iverson-Russell and Newsome are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 25.
