Two students struck by vehicle crossing Washington Road

Two University freshmen were hit by a sedan while crossing Washington Road yesterday. Mary Spencer '06 and Jessica Case '06 were returning from a swimming team practice at around 7 p.m. when they were struck at the crosswalk in front of Fine Hall.

Case, who suffered a broken femur, was taken to Capital Health Systems Hospital in Trenton for special treatment and is listed as in stable condition. Spencer was treated at Princeton Medical Center for injuries to her leg and was released at approximately 10:45 p.m.

Spencer was escorted back to campus by Public Safety. Public Safety told her not to comment on the incident last night.

Public Safety and the Princeton Borough Police responded to the emergency call, which was received at 7:06 p.m.

Authorities blocked off the street from the driveway of Jadwin Gym to Ivy Lane for nearly an hour to isolate the scene of the accident. Public Safety officials said they would not immediately provide additional information about the accident last night.

The vehicle involved was a mustard-colored Saturn. As of last night, authorities had not released the identity of the driver or details about the investigation.

Both girls are residents of Wilson College and members of the University women's swim team.

Yesterday's incident marks the fourth traffic-related injury this year. According to borough statistics, an average of five pedestrian accidents occur per year along Washington Road. In response to the high volume of traffic, the University installed more traffic lights three years ago to increase safety.
