Athlete of the Week: Esmerelda Negron

Many people say that sophomore year is the best year at Princeton. Whether or not that is true, women's soccer's Esmeralda Negron is making the most of it.

Saturday, Negron, a sophomore forward, scored in overtime against Penn to give the Tigers a 2-1 win. Tuesday, she scored the team's only goal in Princeton's 1-0 win over Rutgers. Negron also scored the game-winning goal in Princeton's only other overtime showdown this year, a match against Boston University, to hand the Tigers a 2-1 victory.

Negron has scored four game-winning goals this season, the most of any team member. Negron also leads the team in overall scoring — and is second in the Ivy League — with seven goals this year.

The legend of peaking in your second year of Princeton could be wrong. Things could get even better for Negron after her sophomore season. But the rest of the Ivy League better hope not.

Negron was named Ivy League Player of the Week for her efforts, an honor that fellow Tiger freshman Emily Behncke picked up last week.

The women's soccer team advanced to 11-0-0 over the weekend and is now the only Division I team still unbeaten and untied.

Because of the poor conditions yesterday, the women's soccer game against Villanova was postponed. The Tigers return to action this weekend with a key Ivy game at Lourie-Love Field against Brown on Saturday.

The following weekend Princeton will play Harvard, perhaps the team with the best chance to beat the Tigers in the Ivies this season.
