Athlete of the Week

"All he does is catch touchdowns," ESPN analyst Tom Jackson once said of NFL wide receiver Chris Carter.

All sophomore forward Esmeralda Negron does for the women's soccer team is score game-winning goals.

In her freshman season, Negron tallied six total goals — five of which were game winners. That count also includes the deciding shot against Harvard — an overtime goal that gave head coach Julie Shackford her first win over Harvard at the Tigers' helm.

Continuing her string of clutch performances, Negron once again scored in overtime this past week. The goal was her fourth of the year, putting her well ahead of last season's pace. Negron appeared in 17 games in 2001, starting in 10 of those contests.

While her goal against Boston College, which gave the Tigers a 2-1 win, was not against an Ivy League opponent, the game was still key.

As late as the 70th minute, Princeton trailed the Eagles, 1-0. Sophomore forward Kristina Fontanez, who leads the team with five goals on the season, scored the tying goal — giving Negron a chance to shine in the clutch once again.

The win kept the Tigers out of the loss column, an area they have yet to visit this season. Princeton stretched its winning streak to eight games yesterday with a win over George Mason.

Negron must continue to be an integral part of Princeton's offense if the team hopes not only to win an Ivy title, but also to advance past the second round of the NCAA tournament.
