The women's soccer team proved once again that it deserves its No. 21 national ranking as the Tigers defeated Lehigh 3-0 last night in Bethlehem, Pa.
A balanced attack aided Princeton's offensive efforts as senior midfielder Krista Ariss scored once and added an assist while freshman midfielder Emily Behncke and sophomore forward Esmeralda Negron tallied a goal each for the cause.
Junior midfielder Liz Bell also notched an assist, and freshman forward Maura Gallagher recorded a point in her third straight game to start her career. Named the league's top rookie last week, Gallagher sent in a cross in the 44th minute that Negron was able to finish.
On the other side of the ball, the Mountain Hawks (2-5) never had a chance to get going. The Tigers first lit up the board in the 11th minute of the first half, and scored all of their goals in the opening frame.
Lehigh managed just two shots during the 90-minute match as junior goalkeeper Jean Poster needed to make only one save in combining with freshman Madeleine Jackson to pitch the team's second straight shutout.
Princeton has now outscored its opponents 7-1 this season.
Erin Iwaskiewicz made seven saves on ten shots for Lehigh. With the win, the Tigers move to 3-0 on the season, with all three victories coming on the road. Princeton opened the year with a 2-1 victory against Seton Hall and then avenged last year's conference loss to Yale by beating the Elis 2-0 in New Haven, Conn. The Tigers opens their home schedule Saturday afternoon when they take Dartmouth. The Big Green tied Princeton for the Ivy title last season.
