Field hockey silences roar of Lions in New York

The field hockey team seems to have found its comfort zone once again. Princeton has reached the level of play at which it finished last year.

The Tigers continued their domination of the rest of the Ivy League in their 6-1 crushing win over Columbia (1-2 overall, 0-1 Ivy League) last night in New York.

With the win, Princeton improved to 2-1 overall, and 2-0 in the conference.

More importantly though, Princeton seems to have overcome their season-opening loss to the Bobcats of Ohio, when the Tigers were missing their three senior co-captains for unspecified, non-injury reasons.

Against the Lions, senior attack and co-captain Ilvy Friebe led the offense. On the other side of the ball, senior co-captain Emily Townsend anchors the unit.

Last night, Princeton used a fast start to jump out to a 5-0 first half lead.

The Tigers then put it on cruise control in the second half, allowing Columbia only one goal, which was scored on a penalty corner midway through the half.

Friebe — who led the nation in goals last season — scored four goals for the Tigers, increasing her season total to six in only two games. In addition, sophomore attack Ashley Sennett and senior defender Rachael Becker added goals for Princeton.

Princeton now returns home to 1952 Stadium for three games, the first one on Saturday against Dartmouth.

They then play national powerhouses Maryland and Michigan State next weekend. The Terrapins were the national runner-ups last season.

These two games will serve as a measuring stick for this team to see if they are ready to compete with the best teams in the country.

After all, while victories over Ivy League foes are nice, the Tigers must keep their eyes on the real prize, a national title.
