Page leads men's golf to third of 18 teams at Navy Spring Invitiational

Cold temperatures in the East made golf conditions unfavorable in Annapolis, Md. at the Navy Spring Invitational this past weekend. Coming off a disappointing 11th-place finish two weekends ago at the Pepsi Intercollegiate, the men's golf team came out strong and put together solid rounds of golf to finish in third place out of 18 teams in Annapolis.

Freshman Creighton Page led the Tigers with a two day total of 154 and a tie for seventh overall. The Tigers also got solid performances from sophomore Greg Johnson, who tied for 12th with a 155, and junior Nat Hoopes, who tied for 21st with a 158. senior James Milam and freshman David Huestis rounded out Princeton's top five, both tying for 24th with two-day totals of 159.

The Tigers appeared determined to prove that they were better than they played in their spring opener in Pottsboro, Texas two weekends ago. A third-place finish gives them confidence which they will take into this weekend's Princeton Invitational. Provided they play as well as they did in Annapolis, the Tigers should have no problem defending their Ivy League championship on the weekend of April 20.

Princeton has shown great depth with the addition of freshmen Page and Huestis, making it difficult to predict what order the Tigers' top five players will finish in at any tournament. Although James Milam is the leader of the team due to his experience, each player has shown the ability to lead the team on any particular weekend.

"It was cold and the greens were fast," Page said, "but we were able to play well and take third place. Our team has good depth this year. I like our chances."

The Tigers will head into this weekend's Princeton Invitational on a positive note.

The Princeton women did not have a tournament this past weekend. They will play this coming weekend at the James Madison Invitational in Harrisburg, Va.

The women recently took second place at the William and Mary Invitational. In this tournament the Tigers got strong performances from freshmen Avery Kiser and Meg Nakamura and sophomore Esty Dwek.

Kiser won the individual title with a two-day total of 148, and Nakamura finished one shot back in a tie for second. Esty Dwek finished in a tie for ninth with a two-day total of 153.

Princeton will try to carry this momentum into this weekend's James Madison Invitational and on through the Ivy League Championships two weekends from now.

Princeton has one more tournament in which to participate and use as preparation for the Ivy League Championships.

The Tigers will need to rely on their underclassmen once again to lead them to victory. Their inexperience might be a disadvantage because a few of the players may not know how to deal with the pressure that they will face. However, their inexperience could also be advantageous if they are more excited and energetic than experienced players, making the upcoming tournaments interesting.
