Field hockey wins three in spring tourney

Six of the nation's elite field hockey squads, including Princeton, made their way to 1952 Stadium yesterday for the 7-Aside tournament.

The visiting teams were Old Dominion, Maryland, Penn State, Boston University and Syracuse. The Terps reached the Final Four along with Princeton last season.

Princeton won three of its five games. The Tigers slid past Syracuse, 1-0, with the help of a goal from junior defender Emily Townsend. Princeton played its second game against Penn State and dropped it by a narrow 3-2 margin.

The Tigers rebounded with a win over Boston University in their third game and a win over Maryland in their fourth competition. Princeton ended the tournament with a loss to Old Dominion.

"The Ivy League only allows 12 practices in the spring and other teams play over 50," junior attack Ilvy Friebe said. "That really showed, especially against ODU and Penn State, that they have played together more. But we looked good for the amount we've practiced. The freshmen really stepped up and I think overall we played well.

The Tigers beat the Monarchs, who were defending NCAA champions, 2-1 in the second round of last year's tournament.

Princeton, which won its eighth-straight conference crown with a 7-0 Ivy record and an overall record of 17-3, returns every starter from last year's team.

Leading the Tigers is Friebe, who led the nation in scoring last season. Junior Kelly Baril returns in goal, where she is among the nation's best.
