W., m. golf begin seasons with warm-weather tournaments

The men's and women's golf teams opened their spring seasons with some fun in the sun, as they both headed south for weekend invitational tournaments.

The men traveled to Pottsboro, Tex. to compete in the Pepsi Invitational while the women found themselves in tropical Honolulu for the Hawaii Invitational. The women fared a bit better than the men did, finishing seventh of 12 teams while the men were eleventh out of 13.

The women's team was led by a strong group of freshmen that was able to carry it throughout the weekend. At the head of this group was Avery Kiser. Kiser was the top Princeton finisher for the tournament, as she finished 13th overall.

There were two rounds scheduled for Saturday and the third and final round was played on Sunday. After the first day of competition, Princeton found itself in eighth place.

The Tigers opened with a disappointing first round score of 330. However, the team was able to bounce back with a solid second round, 314, to close out Saturday. It was the fourth best team round posted on the first day of competition.

Kiser had a two round score of 158, which was good for 18th place after the first day. She was joined on the leader board by fellow freshmen Meg Nakamura and Taryn Haladay. Nakamura was tied for 25th and Haladay was tied for 32nd after the first day. Only four shots separated the three players.

On day two, Princeton hoped to finish off the weekend with a solid third and final round and make up some ground on the teams ahead of them.

Once again, Kiser was the spark as she led the way with a team best round of 74, only two over par. That gave her a three round total of 232.

Princeton as a team shot a 319 on the final round, which gave them a seventh place finish. They finished 55 strokes behind Oklahoma St., which won its second straight Hawaii Invitational.

The men did not have as good a weekend as they finished a disappointing 11th at Tanglewood Resort.

After the first two rounds on Saturday, Princeton found itself in 10th place. The Tigers opened with a first round 313, with sophomore Greg Johnson leading the team with a score of 78.

However, it was senior James Milam who posted Princeton's best day one total, with a combined score of 153. That was good enough for 22nd overall after the first day.

Freshman Creighton Page and Johnson were right on his heels as they shot 154 and 155 respectively.

After the first day, Princeton found itself 34 strokes back of first place Michigan St.

On day 2, Princeton was unable to gain any ground on the field, and shot a disappointing 313. This left the team tied for the worst round of the day with Northern Illinois, who finished the tournament in last place. Princeton fell only one spot to No. 11. Michigan St. won the tournament with a total of 873 — 26 points better than the second place Illinois and Minnesota teams that tied for second.

Freshman David Huestis led Princeton on the last day with a 75. He steadily improved over the weekend after an opening round 82. He shot a second round 76 and finished the tournament at 233, which had him tied for 35th place overall.

Milam led Princeton with a three-round total of 230, which had him tied for 25th.

The men's team now enjoys two weeks off before traveling to Annapolis, Md for the Navy Spring Intercollegiate Invitational. Princeton finished second at the event a week ago.

The women's team will compete this weekend at the William and Mary Invitational in Virginia.

While the bright sun may not be there to warm the Tigers' spirits, they're hoping they will be able to experience the warm glow of victory.
