Sometimes a break just comes at the wrong time. For the women's ice hockey team, this appeared to be the case.
Princeton had won three of its final four games and had climbed to the top of the ECAC standings before being forced to take a recess for exams. The streaking Tigers managed to avoid putting a brake on their success, however, as they ushered in the second semester with a 4-1 victory over Yale and a 6-2 pummeling of Concordia.
The Elis came to town Jan. 27 in Princeton's first action since a loss to Brown over two weeks earlier. The Tigers were led by sophomore forward Lisa Rasmussen, who scored twice and added an assist to jumpstart the Princeton offense.
The Tigers burst out of the gate and took the lead only four minutes into the game when Rasmussen corralled her own rebound and beat Yale's senior goalie and captain Katie Hirte. The Tigers received offensive help from an unlikely source on the goal, as sophomore goalie Megan Van Beusekom contributed an assist on the play.
Princeton doubled its lead at 13:45 of the first when senior forward Melissa Deland found the back of the net with assists from Rasmussen and freshman April Brown.
The Tigers continued their offensive onslaught when sophomore forward Gretchen Anderson netted Princeton's third goal of the period at 15:06. Princeton capitalized on three of its 11 shots in the first period while only allowing Yale to get the puck through to Van Beusekom three times.
The Bulldogs scored their lone goal at 14:13 of the second period when sophomore Wallis Finger converted off an assist from freshman Erin Duggan. Finger had two breakaway opportunities in the game but was stopped both times by Van Beusekom.
Princeton finished up the scoring when Rasmussen put in her second goal of the day on a power play. Senior captain Aviva Grumet-Morris and sophomore Angela Gooldy set up the goal, which was Rasmussen's eighth of the season.
The Tigers improved to 11-6-2 overall and 7-3-0 within the ECAC with the victory.
After another week without any games, Princeton traveled north to take on Concordia in Montreal.
Concordia sits at the top of its league and looked to provide a formidable challenge to the Tigers. The Stingers had played Yale twice earlier in the season, beating the Elis by a combined 9-2 score. Concordia did not pose the expected challenge, however, as Princeton destroyed the Stingers, 6-2.
