McDonough appointed general counsel; Ende to remain on staff

Peter McDonough was appointed Jan. 26 to lead the University's legal team as successor to General Counsel Howard Ende. The University Board of Trustees approved the appointment at their Intersession meeting.

"He has an intimate understanding of the University's goals, values, policies and procedures," President Tilghman said in a statement. "In his work on a wide variety of issues he has earned the confidence and respect of his colleagues, his clients and the community at large."

During his time as University counsel, McDonough has handled cases ranging from faculty and student affairs such as employment and research integrity to contract review and construction matters. He also has been involved in the University's periodic study of its intercollegiate athletics programs.

McDonough's promotion comes during a period of many turnovers in the administration. The University is seeking to fill five key administrative positions for next year.

Ende announced last year that he would leave the University this fall to assume presidency of the Mpala Wildlife Foundation in Kenya. The foundation is the primary funding source for the Mpala Research Center — an institute of scientists that monitors environmental conditions in eastern Africa. However, Ende will remain on staff as senior counsel for the next nine months.

McDonough has been active in the legal community in higher education. As a board member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, he has served on several committees.

"Princeton is full of people who have the fortune to embrace their passion within their workplace," McDonough said in a statement. "I'm honored and extraordinarily excited to count myself among them since, for me, this is the best legal job in the world."
