Women's fencing cruises to shutout victory against shorthanded CCNY

After having pitted themselves early in the season against Penn State, one of the top fencing teams in the country, the women's fencing team has already met some of its toughest competitors.

The Tigers went into their meet against City College of New York with high hopes and came out with much more, shutting out CCNY 27-0 Saturday in Jadwin Gym.

The Beavers were lacking a complete squad, so they had to forfeit a good number of the matches. The Tigers came in with a 6-0 advantage at the start of the meet. From there on out, Princeton (3-1) dominated.

The Tigers easily won epée, the team's best division. Senior captain Mary Dunlop, junior Jennifer Golia, and sophomore Simran Winkelstern all came out winning two bouts, thereby allotting them a third forfeit.

In sabre, the team is relatively young and still learning to gain a good footing for the rest of the season. But the Tigers' reliance on three freshmen did not prevent them from winning their bouts. Freshmen Tal Zamir and Catherine Pack both came out with 2-0 wins. Junior sabre squad leader Miya Tokumitsu ended up with a win, 1-0, as did freshman Lauren Hayward.

In foil, freshmen Franziska Albers and Inhwa Song and junior Crystal Jiang each won a bout.

Since the team is so heavily weighted with freshmen, the meet proved to be a good opportunity for gaining experience before the season gets into full swing.

"This is typically a meet where a lot of our younger, less experienced fencers get to fence but everyone fenced well," Dunlop said, "and we were able to make it through the entire meet without losing a single match."

Even for the younger fencers, the difference in the meet was evident.

"I guess it was more intense than a regular season practice but less so than most of our meets," Pack said. "I think it was to keep everyone tuned up during reading period and the break."

With such an easy win, the Tigers can look forward to taking on against one of the top teams in the country, St. John's, later in February.
