"You have reached U-Call, the Princeton University voice directory," the male voice says with its familiar pauses and intonations. "To reach any University extension, using the keys on the touch tone pad, spell the last name of the person you are attempting to reach," the voice continues.
That voice, which in the past week has already been replaced by that of a woman at the other end of the extension for voicemail will soon infiltrate scores of other University telephone announcements.
For years, according to University telecommunications manager Frank Ferrara, the voice of the U-Call system — as well as other University automated directories — has been that of Thomas Heller, who recently retired as the University's manager of voice processing systems.
Upon retiring, Heller requested that his voice no longer be used as a menu board for the systems.
As a result, Ferrara said, several months from now, when people dial U-Call or a host of other agencies and departments related to the University, the voice of the new manager of voice processing systems, Janet Hutton, will be heard in place of Heller's.
"It's not really a priority, but we want to adhere to Tom's wishes," said Ferrara. "[Janet Hutton] has started going through them and should be done in the next couple of months."
According to Ferrara, Hutton's voice, in the end, will be heard at nearly 100 phone numbers related to the University, including those for the Emergency Weather Hotline, the Human Resources Menu Board and the McCosh Health Center, in addition to U-CALL.
Hutton could not be reached for comment yesterday.
