Down 14-11 in the fifth game of women's volleyball's match against Penn, the Tigers were in a familiar position.
All year, Princeton (14-8 overall, 8-4 Ivy League) has been unable to close out matches and it seemed like Tuesday's battle would be no different. After winning the first two games 30-28 and 30-27, Princeton had dropped the next two to the Quakers (16-5, 10-2) and was within one point of losing the shortened fifth game.
But then the Tigers finally showed why they are the defending Ivy champions and were expected to repeat.
Princeton reeled off the final five points of the match and took home a 16-14 win in the fifth game to take home a 3-2 win and spoil the Quakers chance of clinching the Ivy title on their own court.
Penn won the third and fourth games by scores of 30-21 and 30-19.
Junior middle Abby Studer led the Tigers with 18 kills and added three solo blocks on the evening. Freshman outside Alex Brown continued her solid play in the second half of the season recording nine kills and a game-high 33 digs.
Senior setter Ana Yoerg played a good all-around match, passing the ball for 55 assists and recording 18 digs of her own.
Princeton will conclude its regular season at Brown on Friday and at Yale on Saturday. The games are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
Penn can seal its first Ivy title since 1990 with a win at Yale on Friday evening.
