Going into the women's swimming team's meet against Brown Thursday afternoon in Providence, R.I., the Tigers knew they would have to dominate the backstroke and the long-distance freestyle events to stay undefeated this season in dual meets.
No. 24 Princeton (4-0) achieved that goal, as senior Kate Conroy won a pair of backstroke events and classmate Val Kukla took the 1000-yard freestyle. The Tigers did not stop there, however, cruising to a 179-121 victory. Brown (2-1) managed to win only six races on the afternoon.
Freshman Chrissy Macauley ended Brown's traditional dominance in the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50-yard free in a time of 23.57 seconds.
The win was especially important for the Tigers who were hoping to get on a more even field with the Bears in the sprint events.
Kukla was not the only long-distance swimmer to do well, though as sophomore Sarah Frauman led Princeton to a 1-2-3 finish in the 500-yard free. Frauman finished in 4:56.11, less than a second ahead of Kukla. Freshman Nicole Somers took third place in the race.
Junior Molly Seto added another Princeton victory in the 100-yard butterfly. She finished in 56.28 seconds.
Conroy, however, was the star for Princeton, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.77 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 2:04.34.
Today and tomorrow Princeton will have individuals competing at the U.S. Open in Long Island, N.Y. and then the Tigers will come back to Denunzio Pool Sunday to face Bucknell, Penn, Rider, UMBC and Villanova in the Princeton Invitational. The meet will start at 10 a.m.
