Friebe scores two more as field hockey rebounds with 3-2 win over Delaware

Last night the Princeton field hockey team traveled to the University of Delaware and defeated the Blue Hens, 3-2, in the first step of recovery after a disastrous loss to Penn State last weekend.

Princeton, ranked No. 7 nationally, has currently won eightstraight games against the Delaware program in a series that began with a 0-0 tie in 1973 and now stands at 9-9-3.

Junior Ilvy Friebe put the Tigers on the board 11 minutes, 58 seconds into the first half with an unassisted goal, her 18th of the season. Friebe leads the nation in goals, goals per game, points and points per game.

Delaware's Leah Gelb put in a shot to even things up at 1-1 with 5:18 remaining in the half, but Princeton quickly maneuvered the ball back upfield and achieved a 2-1 lead thanks to a goal from junior co-captain Emily Townsend.

The Blue Hens were not to be deterred by the newly invigorated Princeton offense, however, and came storming out of the locker room with an early second-half goal from Kelly Coyle.

The game then remained even for a while, as the two teams warred back and forth over the field.

Princeton finally broke through, and with 15:38 remaining junior Rachael Becker broke through the Delaware defense to score what would be the final goal, putting Princeton up 3-2.

Princeton junior co-captain and goalie Kelly Baril had seven saves, while Blue Hen goalie Stephanie Judefind ended the game with six. Princeton next travels to Brown Saturday to play in what may determine the Ivy-league championship.
